The Alexander McCrie Duncan essay, entitled "Longinus" was written while he was attending Springfield Academy in Effingham County, Georgia. Alexander McCrie Duncan (1837-1915) was the son of William Duncan, a native of Scotland who immigrated to Georgia in 1818. Alexander attended Springfield Academy in Effingham County, Georgia, with his younger brother, William Duncan, Jr. In 1859 and 1860, Alexander clerked with his father's company, Duncan & Johnston, a firm of factors and commission merchants.
